Registration

A quick guide to getting registered for the SAT/ACT:

Registration basics

  1. Know your test dates

The SAT and ACT are hosted year-round, with more tests held in the fall and spring. For the 2022-2023 school year, the official dates are as follows:

*Indicates the likely final date for seniors to receive scores in time for Early Decision deadlines.

**Indicates the likely final date for seniors to receive scores in time for Regular Decision deadlines.

SAT

August 27th, 2022

October 1st, 2022*

November 5th, 2022

December 3rd, 2022**

March 11th, 2023

May 6th, 2023

June 3rd, 2023

ACT

September 10th, 2022*

October 22nd, 2022

December 10th, 2022**

February 11th, 2023

April 15th, 2023

June 10th, 2023

July 15th, 2023

When preparing to register, consider your family's schedule and try to anticipate potential conflicts (notoriously, tests are often held the same morning as Homecoming and Prom - keep that in mind).

For juniors, think about your course load, including finals and AP/IB tests.

For seniors, think about your college application deadlines: are you applying early decision, regular decision, rolling deadline, etc? Scores typically take 2 weeks to be released.

Test on a school day?

Ask your counselor if your school will host an SAT or ACT School Day. The School Day is an official administration that you can take at your school, usually on a Wednesday in the spring and/or fall, that counts as a real set of scores. It is usually free. If your school doesn't have plans to host a School Day, ask if they're open to it! Sometimes schools can be swayed if parents are interested.

2. Gather your materials and set aside time

You'll be required to have several things on hand at the time of registration, including a photo of you (like for an ID or passport) and payment information. Have this on hand so you don't lose your spot! They may limit the amount of time you can keep a reservation in your "cart" before paying, so be prepared to complete the registration in one sitting. It takes 15-30 minutes.

3. Plan for the future

Minimize future stress by taking care of essentials now:

  • Print your admissions ticket and put it in a secure spot!

  • Make note of the deadline to change or cancel your registration for a refund, just in case.

  • If you're planning to register for future exams, do so while you're there. If those dates have not opened yet, mark your calendar for when they will.

registration tips

  1. Register early

In recent years, a shortage of test centers has caused registration to be difficult in certain parts of the country, especially New York and California. To ensure you get a spot at a convenient test center, register as early as you can.

  1. Register for multiple dates - even if you're not sure you'll use them!

Then, just keep an eye on the deadlines for changes and cancellations. You can change your registration to a different date or cancel for a refund before the deadline passes.

  1. Check back frequently

If you can't get a spot at a convenient test center, check back frequently as spots often open up closer to the day.

  1. Call the big guys!

If your test center cancels your test date (rare these days, but not unheard of), call the College Board or ACT. They can often pull strings and get you into a different center.
